Behind the Design: Our Gull Lake Cottage

Every designer has that one project — the personal one that gets squeezed in between client work, evolves over years, and becomes a true reflection of who they are. For me, that project is our Gull Lake cottage.

My husband and I purchased this 1960s cottage several years ago with a vision to transform it into our family’s lakeside retreat. What started as “just a few updates” became a complete renovation — and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Vision

We wanted the cottage to feel like an exhale — casual, warm, and connected to the lake. That meant an open floor plan, tons of natural light, and materials that could handle sandy feet and wet swimsuits. No precious fabrics here.

Design Choices

Shiplap walls in a soft white set the tone. We brought in natural wood tones through open shelving and a reclaimed beam in the living room. The kitchen got a fresh update with sage green cabinetry, brass hardware, and butcher block counters — functional and beautiful.

The color palette is all soft blues, warm whites, and natural greens — inspired by the view from every window. Linen curtains, woven rugs, and plenty of throw blankets make every corner an invitation to sit and stay awhile.

The Ongoing Journey

A personal project is never truly “done” — and that’s part of the joy. We’re still finding the perfect pieces, swapping art, and dreaming about the outdoor spaces. It’s a living, breathing space that grows with our family.
